USDA: Corn use for fuel ethanol up in March

The USDA recently released its Grain Crushings and Co-Products Production report for May, reporting that corn use for fuel alcohol reached 473 million bushels in March, up 9 percent from February and up 3 percent from March 2017. Total corn consumed for alcohol and other uses reached 526 million bushels, up 9 percent from February and up 2 percent when compared to the same period of 2017.

Of the 473 million bushels of corn that went to fuel ethanol production in March, 90.7 percent sent to dry milling fuel production and 9.03 percent went to wet milling fuel production.

According to the USDA, 2.232 million hundredweight (cwt) (124,922 tons) of sorghum also went to dry mill fuel ethanol production in March, up from 1.815 million cwt in February, but down from 7.055 million cwt in March 2017.

At dry mills, condensed distillers solubles production reached 145,808 tons, down from 152,279 tons in February, but up from 141,951 tons in March 2017. Corn oil production reached 148,490 tons, down from 164,531 tons in February, but up from 143,260 tons in March of the previous year. Distillers dried grains production reached 417,190 tons, up from 371,026 tons in February, but down from 425,213 tons in March 2017. Distillers dried grains with solubles production reached 1.94 million tons, up from 1.83 million tons in April, but down from nearly 2 million tons in March 2017. Distillers wet grains production reached 1.41 million tons, up from 1.26 tons in February and 1.39 million tons in March of the previous year. Modified distillers wet grains production reached 509,088 tons, up from 452,351 tons in February and 457,407 tons in March 2017.

At wet mills, corn germ meal production reached 58,359 tons, up slightly from 58,531 tons in February, but down from 59,425 tons in March 2017. Corn gluten feed production reached 319.757 tons, up from 285,466 tons in February, but down from 355,194 tons in March 2017. Corn gluten meal production reached 97,157, up from 90,924 tons in February and 89,491 tons in March. Wet corn gluten feed production reached 276,350 tons, up from 254,749 tons in February, but down from 307,814 tons in March 2017.

At dry and wet mills, carbon dioxide captured reached 210,775 tons in March, up from 187,762 tons in February and 207,016 tons in March of the previous year.
