USDA: December biodiesel imports, exports down from previous year

The U.S. exported 19,303.6 metric tons of biodiesel and biodiesel blends of B30 or greater in December, according to data released by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service on Feb. 5. Biodiesel imports were at 97,4200.7 metric tons for the month. 

The 19,303.6 metric tons of biodiesel exported in December was up when compared to the 16,879.6 metric tons exported the previous month, but down from 55,131.8 metric tons exported in December 2023.

The U.S. exported biodiesel to approximately four countries in December. Canada was the top destination for U.S. biodiesel exports at 13,298.2 metric tons, followed by Peru at 5,904.4 metric tons and Germany at 100 metric tons.

The value of U.S. biodiesel exports reached $19.58 million in December, up from $17.35 million the previous month and $94.79 million in December of the previous year. 

Total biodiesel exports for 2024 reached 585,324.4 metric tons at a value of $798.2 million, compared to 869,478.8 metric tons exported in 2023 at a value of $1.53 billion. Canada was the top destination for biodiesel exports last year at 515,956 metric tons, followed by Peru at 64,870.6 metric tons and Germany at 2,239.9 metric tons. 

The 97,420.7 metric tons of biodiesel and biodiesel blends of B30 or greater imported in December was up when compared to the 76,519.5 metric tons imported in November, but down from the 158,044.1 metric tons imported in December 2023. 

The U.S. imported biodiesel from approximately six countries in December. Germany was the top source of U.S. biodiesel imports at 60,778.4 metric tons, followed by Canada at 28,074.4 metric tons and Italy at 8,482.3 metric tons.

The value of U.S. biodiesel imports was $119.13 million in December, up from $91.44 million the previous month, but down from $234.1 million in December of the previous year. 

Total biodiesel imports for 2024 reached 1.4 million metric tons at a value of $1.88 billion, compared to 1.69 million metric tons imported in 2023 at a value of $2.79 billion. Canada was the top source of U.S. biodiesel imports last year at 430,526.5 metric tons, followed by Germany at 380,418.7 metric tons and Spain at 300,072.4 metric tons.
