Approximately 92.8 million acres of corn is expected to be planted in the U.S. this year, up 4 percent or 3.66 million acres from 2018, according to the USDA&rsquo;s annual Prospective Plantings report, which was released March 29.
When compared to 2018, the USDA said planted corn acreage is expected to be up or unchanged in 34 of the 48 estimating states. The top states for corn acreage are expected to be Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, and South Dakota.
Farmers in Iowa are expected to plant approximately 13.6 million areas of corn this year, up from 13.2 million last year. Corn acreage in Illinois is expected to reach 11.2 million acres, up from 11 million in 2018. In Nebraska, farmers are expected to plant 9.7 million areas of corn, up from 9.6 million acres last year. Corn acreage in Minnesota is expected to reach 8 million acres, up from 7.9 million acres in 2018. In South Dakota, farmers are expected to plant 6 million acres of corn, up from 5.3 million acres last year.
The USDA released its first Crop Progress report of the season on April 1. That report did not address corn, but noted the agency&rsquo;s Crop Progress report scheduled for release April 8 is expected to provide data on corn planted acres.
