Pouring on Improvement

New and improved yeasts—more robust and effective than ever—are helping ethanol producers optimize today while adapting for tomorrow. With input from producers, these enhanced fermentation products are being designed for superior fit and flexibility.

Early in the pandemic, U.S. exports of ethanol and DDGS declined. While exports haven't quite reached pre-pandemic levels, they're back up, and growing demand for low-carbon fuel and protein should support increased use of both products worldwide.

2021 Award of Excellence recipient Kurt Rosentrater has had a meaningful impact on the evolution of distillers grains through research and education. Both a university professor and coproducts association leader, he finds synergies in his dual roles.

Steve Markham, this year's High Octane Award recipient, credits his career success to past and present colleagues, trade groups and family. He accepted the accolade in July at the 37th annual International Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo.

Branching Out

Aemetis' refinery will produce renewable diesel and renewable jet fuel from almond orchard and forest wood waste, which will also yield a negative carbon sugar source for ethanol. The Keyes, California, plant is also ditching fossil-based power.

The Ethanol Producer Awards highlight industry leaders and their contributions to their industries and communities.

This year marks the 50th year of business for NLB Corp., the largest manufacturer of high-pressure water equipment and accessories.

New rollouts in clean-in-place processes are easing burdens on ethanol plants, but proper care to analyze the downstream impacts of these practices are crucial. Producers should be particularly mindful of protecting the integrity of their coproducts.

DuPont's XCELIS® AI enhances ethanol plant operational assessment with data-driven analyses and predictive modeling driven by science and engineering fundamentals. The new tools will help de-risk decision making and enhance plant optimization.

As sustainability and low-carbon commodities become increasingly sought out, several companies are working to connect grain buyers—like ethanol plants—and growers who practice sustainable farming. It's a promising trend for biofuels and agriculture.
