Refiners file brief in Supreme Court SRE case

Affiliates of HollyFrontier and Wynnewood Refining on Feb. 22 filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court arguing their position against the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals' January 2020 ruling on small refinery exemptions (SREs).

Brightmark LLC and Chevron U.S.A. Inc. on Feb. 17 announced the expansion of their previously announced joint venture, Brightmark RNG Holdings LLC, to own projects across the United States to produce and market dairy biomethane.

Agreement signed for Illinois RNG project

On Feb. 10, Will County, Illinois, officials and its construction trade partners signed a project labor agreement (PLA) for the $45 million renewable natural gas (RNG) plant approved for construction at the county-owned Prairie View landfill.
The U.S. EPA released updated SRE data on Feb. 18, reporting that one new SRE petition has been filed for RFS compliance year 2020. A total of 66 SRE petitions are now pending, up from 65 that were pending as of Jan. 19.
Calumet Specialty Products Partners L.P. on Feb. 16 announced plans to produce renewable diesel at its petroleum refinery in Great Falls, Montana. The company is expected to discuss the project during its fourth quarter earnings call on March 3.
Maire Tecnimont announces South American renewable diesel project

Maire Tecnimont, through its subsidiary NextChem and Essential Energy USA Corp., on Feb. 15 executed a front-end engineering design contract as well as a memorandum of understanding for the construction of a renewable diesel plant in South America.
Reps. David McKinley, R-W.V., and Marc Veasey, D-Texas, on Feb. 16 reintroduced the ACCESS 45Q Act. The bill extends the date for projects to begin construction to claim the 45Q tax credit by 10 years and provides a direct pay elective.
Fulcrum BioEnergy Ltd. on Feb. 16 announced plans to develop a 30 MMgy sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant at Essar Oil (UK) Ltd.'s refinery near Liverpool, England. The project could be operational as soon as 2025.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration released its Annual Energy Outlook 2021 (AEO2021) on Feb. 3, predicting that the consumption of biofuels as a share of the domestic fuel mix will gradually increase through 2050.

Rolls-Royce tests 100% SAF in business jet engine

Rolls-Royce has conducted the first tests of 100 percent SAF in a business jet engine. This test demonstrated that the company's current engines for large civil and business jet applications can operate with 100 percent SAF as a full drop-in option.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on Jan. 27 released proposed regulations to implement the Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling Act, which was enacted in 2019 and takes effect on Jan. 1, 2022.
