US wood pellet exports up in September

The U.S. exported 690,515.4 metric tons of wood pellets in September, up from both 647,901.5 metric tons in August and 608,099.7 metric tons in September 2020, according to data released by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service on Nov. 4.
Enviva Partners LP released third quarter financial results on Nov. 3, reporting that construction of its pellet plant in Lucedale, Mississippi, is nearly complete, with commissioning expected to begin in the late fourth quarter of 2021.
The U.K. government on Nov. 4 published a policy statement that provides an early indication of priorities and intentions for biomass use ahead of the planned publication of a full biomass strategy in 2022.

UK government releases Net Zero Strategy

The U.K. unveiled its Net Zero Strategy on Oct. 19, which includes a wide variety of provisions, including those related to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), and efforts to decarbonize heating.
The USDA on Oct. 19 announced approximately $13 million in new funding opportunities to support market innovation in wood products and wood energy. The announcement was made at an event to kick off National Forest Products Week.
The U.K. government on Oct. 19 issued an update on the U.K.'s CCUS Cluster Sequencing Process, confirming that the Hynet and East Coast Clusters are moving forward. Drax's BECSS project will play a vital role in the East Coast Cluster.

USDA: US wood pellet exports up in August

The U.S. exported 647,904.5 metric tons of wood pellets in August, up from both 644,494.1 metric tons in July and 585,883.3 metric tons in August 2020, according to data released by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service on Oct. 5.
The U.S. Industrial Pellet Association and U.K. Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA) are slamming a new Chatham House report on biomass energy that they say uses deeply flawed carbon accounting methods.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration recently released data showing U.S. manufacturers produced approximately 770,000 tons of densified biomass fuel in June, with sales reaching 860,000 tons.
EIA updates bioenergy forecasts for 2021, 2022

Renewables are expected to account for approximately 20 percent of U.S. electricity generation this year, increasing to 22 percent in 2022, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, released Oct. 13.
The EIA predicts that nearly 1.7 million, or 1.3 percent, of U.S. households will use cord wood or wood pellets as their primary heating fuel for residential space heating this winter. An additional 8 percent will use wood as a secondary heat source.
On Oct. 7, U.S. EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan announced the appointment of Rod Snyder to become EPA's Agriculture Advisor. Snyder will lead outreach and engagement efforts with the agricultural community for EPA.
The U.S. Senate on Oct. 7 voted to confirm Xochitl Torres Small as under secretary of rural development at the USDA. USDA Rural Development administers a variety of programs related to biofuels and bioenergy.
