Formed in 2008, the Association of Nebraska Ethanol Producers board of directors recently approved a plan to restructure the organization by bringing daily management and operations “in house.” As part of that plan, ANEEP is in the process of seeking qualified applicants to serve as the state-level trade association’s executive director.

“I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for someone,” said Monte Shaw, executive director of Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, a state-level trade group in Iowa.  “IRFA went through a very similar transition in 2005. Before that IRFA outsourced operations to Iowa Corn. Then it’s natural for a group to reach a point in time, whether membership to revenue, where you want the organization to stand on its own two feet.”

Given the similar experience, ANEEP has contracted with IRFA to assist with the transition and the search for a new executive director.

The new executive director, headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska, will have overall management and fiduciary responsibility for the non-profit organization, and will report to ANEEP’s executive committee and board of directors. Main areas of focus for ANEEP include state legislative and regulatory operations, market development, communications, and political engagement with Nebraska’s state and federal elected representatives.

Loran Schmit is the current executive director and will remain so during the transition until the end of the year. His company, Schmit Industries, has been providing ANEEP association management and lobbying services.

“Looking from the outside in, ANEEP’s current setup worked well for the group,” added Shaw. “Now they’re ready to take the next step. The next executive director will have the best of both worlds. First, ANEEP is a solid organization with a track record. That provides stability. This isn’t some new, uncertain venture. But secondly, the new ED will be on the ground floor of shaping what the new ANEEP structure looks like. That’s an exciting combination that doesn’t come around very often.”

Nebraska is the second largest ethanol producing state and ANEEP has 16 ethanol plant members.
