The U.S. Department of Energy has announced its intent to issue a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) entitled “Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines.”

According to the DOE, the FOA will support the Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines (Co-Optima) initiative, a collaborative initiative being pursued by the DOE’s Bioenergy Technology Office and Vehicle Technologies Office to accelerate the introduction of affordable, scalable, and sustainable high-performance fuels for use in high-efficiency engines.

Documents published by the DOE further explain the initiative’s integrated approach combines the previously independent areas of biofuels and combustion research and development. The multi-year project aims to provide industry with the scientific underpinnings required to move new biofuels and advanced engine systems to market faster while identifying and addressing barriers to commercialization.

The FOA is restricted to U.S. institutions of higher education and non-profit research institutions that operate as a division under the U.S. institutions of higher education. According to the DOE, the FOA is expected to be posted to the DOE’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Exchange website in August.

Additional information is available on the EERE Exchange website under DE-FOA-0001623
