The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) generation data for December, reporting more than 1.84 billion RINs were generated during the final month of last year, including nearly 16.83 million cellulosic RINs. For all of 2016, a net total of nearly 19.41 billion RINs were generated, including nearly 176.8 million cellulosic RINs.
Nearly 16.83 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in December, bringing the net total for 2016 to 176.32 million. Nearly 3.81 million D3 RINs were generated for ethanol last year, with 107.51 million generated for renewable compressed natural gas and 66.84 million generated for renewable liquefied natural gas. More than 158.98 million D3 RINs were generated domestically, with 19.18 million generated by importers.

No D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in December. The net total for last year was 480,988, all of which were generated for cellulosic heating oil by importers.
More than 6 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in December, bringing the net total for 2016 to 96.92 million. Nearly 61.28 million D5 RINs were generated for ethanol, with 26.27 million generated for naptha, 1.54 million generated for heating oil and 7.93 million generated for nonester renewable diesel. More than 62.62 million D5 RINs were generated domestically, with 34.4 million generated by importers.
Nearly 1.3 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in December, bringing the net total for 2016 to nearly 15.15 billion. Most, 14.71 billion, were generated for ethanol, with 169.32 generated for biodiesel, 281.62 million generated for nonester renewable diesel and 162,942 generated for butanol. More than 14.7 billion D6 RINs were generated domestically, with 179.42 million generated by importers and 281.62 million generated by foreign entities.

More than 524.36 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in December, bringing the net total for last year to 3.99 billion. The majority, 3.28 billion, were generated for biodiesel, with 715.42 million generated for nonester renewable diesel and 2.41 million generated for renewable jet fuel. More than 2.85 billion D4 RINs were generated domestically, with 830.65 million generated by importers and 312.85 million generated by foreign entities.
As of December, the EPA estimates 19.44 billion RINs were generated last year, with 761.16 million retired, 968.46 million locked and available and 17.71 billion unlocked and available.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration maintained its forecast for 2025 and 2026 biodiesel, renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production in its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, released July 8.
XCF Global Inc. on July 10 shared its strategic plan to invest close to $1 billion in developing a network of SAF production facilities, expanding its U.S. footprint, and advancing its international growth strategy.
U.S. fuel ethanol capacity fell slightly in April, while biodiesel and renewable diesel capacity held steady, according to data released by the U.S. EIA on June 30. Feedstock consumption was down when compared to the previous month.
XCF Global Inc. on July 8 provided a production update on its flagship New Rise Reno facility, underscoring that the plant has successfully produced SAF, renewable diesel, and renewable naphtha during its initial ramp-up.
The U.S. EPA on July 8 hosted virtual public hearing to gather input on the agency’s recently released proposed rule to set 2026 and 2027 RFS RVOs. Members of the biofuel industry were among those to offer testimony during the event.
