Mo. high school breaks ground on biodiesel center

Nearly two years ago, Biodiesel Magazine introduced a story about Rockwood Summit High School in Fenton, Mo., and the school’s desire—and chemistry teacher Darrin Peters’ drive—to expand its biodiesel production center.
Earlier this year, we announced that Monsanto donated $100,000 to the Missouri school to make the dream happen.

To bring the story nearly full circle, a groundbreaking event was held two days ago on June 16 for the Monsanto Education Center for Sustainable Solutions.
In addition to funding from Monsanto, the center’s establishment is supported by the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council, National Biodiesel Board, National Corn Growers Association and the St. Louis Community Foundation.

The center will be housed in a new building constructed on Rockwood Summit’s campus and will include an area where students and advisors can plant row crops to study how plants such as corn and soybeans produce renewable sources of fuel.

Conestoga Energy and SAFFiRE Renewables LLC announced on Nov. 16 their agreement for Conestoga to host SAFFiRE’s cellulosic ethanol pilot plant at Conestoga’s Arkalon Energy ethanol facility in Liberal, Kansas.
Officials at Calumet Specialty Products Partners L.P. discussed the company’s proposed plans to boost sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production at its Montana Renewables biorefinery during third quarter earnings call, held Nov. 9.
