Siouxland Ethanol reports a 17.8 percent reduction in natural gas use during its first month using MSW Consulting Inc.’s energy recovery system (MER).

Siouxland is the first plant to use MER, which carries MSW Consulting’s guarantee of at least a 15 percent reduction in natural gas use. At its full potential, MER can reduce natural gas use as much as 30 to 35 percent, according to the company. Siouxland expects to eventually see a 25 percent reduction.

MER is a turnkey system that can be installed and commissioned within six months, according to MSW Consulting. The system recovers low-quality energy from dryer exhaust and transforms it into steam energy that can be used as a natural gas replacement.

“There is nothing like this in the industry,” said James Knight, principle of MSW Consulting. “Nothing has been done like this in the past. We can now take energy from the plant’s dryer exhaust. It’s the first of its kind. … Ethanol is inarguably energy positive now.”

MSW Consulting said it does have other potential customers interested in MER. The company made the system marketable to consumers in June at the 2017 International Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo.
