UNICA: Hydrous ethanol sales set a record in May

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced sales of hydrous ethanol reached a record 2.05 billion liters (541.55 million gallons) in May, up 50.64 percent when compared to sales during the same month of last year.

According to UNICA, mills in the country’s south-central region processes 44.01 million tons of sugarcane during the second half of May, up 34.87 percent when compared to the same period of last year. Since the beginning of the current harvest period, which began April 1, 128.4 million tons of sugarcane has been processed, down from 135.58 million tons processed during the same period of 2018.

As of the end of May, UNICA reports 245 mills in the region were operational, down from 249 mills that were operational during the same time of last year. An additional 10 mills were expected to begin processing sugarcane during the first half of June.

Mills in the region produced 1.42 billion liters of hydrous ethanol and 723.04 million liters of anhydrous ethanol during the second half of May. Since the beginning of the harvest period, ethanol production has reached 6.17 billion liters, including 1.68 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol and 4.49 billion liters of hydrous ethanol.

Since the beginning of the harvest, UNIAC said 66.59 percent of sugarcane has gone to ethanol production.

Corn ethanol production reached 48.59 million liters during the second half of May. Since April 1, corn ethanol production has reached 201.06 million liters, up 71.95 percent when compared to the same period of last year.

Ethanol sales by mills in the south-central region reached 2.85 billion liters in May, up 50.64 percent when compared to the same period of last year. Of that volume, sales of hydrous ethanol reached 2.05 billion liters, up 53.19 percent and setting a new sales record for May.

Sales of anhydrous ethanol reached 805.33 million liters, up 44.53 percent from the same period of last year.

Since the beginning of the current harvest season, ethanol sales have totaled 5.51 billion liters, including 3.91 billion liters of hydrous ethanol and 1.6 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol. Of that total, 5.31 billion liters were sold domestically, with 203.89 million liters destined for export. UNICA said domestic sales of hydrous ethanol were up 44.65 percent when compared to the same period of the previous harvest.
