Vertex Energy Inc. on Aug. 8 announced it has ceased renewable diesel production at its refinery in Mobile, Alabama. The company is working to convert its hydrocracker back to conventional service and expects to be processing fossil feedstock before the end of the year.

Vertex in mid-2021 announced an agreement to acquire the Mobile refinery and convert a portion of it to renewable diesel production. The renewable diesel unit began operations in Spring 2023. In May 2024, the company announced plans to cease renewable diesel production at the facility and return he previously converted hydrocracker unit to fossil fuel production. Vertex provided an update on that process in its second quarter financial results.

According to Vertex, the Mobile facility processed all its remaining renewable feedstock during the second quarter and began optimizing hydrocracker capacity from renewable diesel to conventional fuels. Fossil fuel production is expected to begin before the end of the year.
