Between 2011-'12, biofuel consumption grew only 2.9 percent, compared to the previous year's growth of 5.3 percent. Reasons given by EurObserv'ER's annual Biofuels Barometer include economic crisis and a pending EU biofuels cap and ILUC inclusion.
John Swire & Sons (Green Investments) Ltd. has acquired Scottish biodiesel producer Argent Energy for an undisclosed sum. The plant uses BDI-BioEnergy International technology to convert used cooking oil, tallow and sewer grease to biodiesel.
After years in the works, Enerfuel S.A.'s 25,000 ton (7.5 MMgy) multifeedstock biodiesel plant in Sines, Portugal, has officially begun production. Enerfuel first commissioned BDI-BioEnergy International AG in 2006, but halted the project in 2008.
Sapphire Energy Inc. and The Linde Group are expanding their partnership to commercialize an industrial-scale hydrothermal treatment process, developed and used by Sapphire Energy at pilot scale today, to upgrade algae biomass to crude oil.
With 53 percent raw material content, rapeseed oil remains the most important raw material source for the production of biodiesel in Germany, followed by palm oil with 25 percent, and coconut and soy oil at 11 percent each. UFOP sampled 60 stations.
Today the GRFA slammed a new study by Friends of the Earth for its glaring omissions and use of a controversial theory on land use impacts of biofuels. The report relies on unproven ILUC and is silent on underlying causes of global hunger.
"The current debate is asking the wrong questions," said Garofalo. "Limiting biofuels production will neither solve hunger...nor prevent deforestation. ILUC modeling remains uncertain...the industry cannot be penalized on groundless assumptions."

On July 4, Sofiproteol presented plans for reorganization of its biodiesel production activities in France, designed to improve competitiveness while preserving jobs. These plans provide for the closure of two production units totaling 114 MMgy.
EIA data shows U.S. exports of biodiesel outpaced imports in April
The study concludes that these models use very low values for increasing yields, contradicting previously observed data trends, and are much lower than assumptions used in production forecasts by international institutions such as the FAO.
Brazilian biodiesel producer BSBios, a joint venture between BSPAR and Petrobras Biofuel, has exported its, and Brazil's, first commercial shipment of biodiesel June 25, the company stated. A small 6,600 gallon load is headed to Rotterdam Harbor.
The QAP program as outlined in the EPA's NPRM was written to cover only domestic production, but now RINs generated by importers on foreign production and RINs generated by foreign companies are covered by EcoEngineers' and Genscape's QAP programs.
EU Parliament committee members voted to boost advanced biofuels use by setting mandatory targets, but a reliable ILUC model must be found first. It also boosted conventional biofuel allowance from its original proposal of 5 percent to 6.5 percent.

Aurora Algae received a notice of allowance from the USPTO for U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 12/480,635, entitled, "VCP-Based Vectors for Algal Cell Transformation." This makes 12 patent applications either issued or allowed and 30 more pending.
Dutch company BTG has developed a process to produce a diesel biofuel from second-generation biomass. The company has recently tested a 25 percent blend of the pyrolysis biobased diesel in a four-wheel drive vehicle in Enshede, The Netherlands.
Dutch company FirmTec will deliver a biodiesel plant capable of producing 100 percent green product. The client is the Indonesian company Waterland and the biodiesel will be produced with the aid of enzymes and ethanol, using camelina oil.
The agreement is contingent on Cellana's future production capacity and on compliance with future biofuel legislation in the EU and U.S., among other things. Cellana expects to be able to produce algae oil on a commercial scale by late 2015.
The latest in US biodiesel imports, what to expect this summer, and why the domestic industry can grow in spite of more imports
U.S. imports of biomass-based diesel skyrocketed at the end of the first quarter as the nation imported more than eight times the volume in March over February, according to new EIA data. Gross U.S. imports jumped to 17.3 million gallons in March.
According to Regulation 490/2013, provisional dumping margins on various Argentine biodiesel exporters range from 6.8 to 10.6 percent. For Indonesian biodiesel exporters, the provisional dumping margins range from zero to 9.6 percent.
The study concludes that the calculations for the introduction of specific greenhouse gas values for raw materials used as a foundation for current biofuels is not supported by facts and, thus, cannot serve as a foundation for European legislation.
Reports indicate Argentina is working to gain RFS2 registration to find another outlet for its biodiesel now that the EU appears to be establishing tariffs on its product; but sources here in the U.S. indicate they have a difficult road ahead of them
