The U.S. Energy Information Administration maintained its 2024 and 2025 forecasts for the production of biodiesel, renewable diesel and other biofuels, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), in its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, released Nov. 13.

The EIA currently expects U.S. biodiesel production to average 110,000 barrels per day in 2024 and 100,000 barrels per day in 2025. Both estimates were maintained from the October STEO. Biodiesel production averaged 110,000 barrels per day in 2023.

The agency currently expects net imports of biodiesel to average 10,000 barrels per day in 2024, compared to last month’s forecast of 20,000 barrels per day. The agency maintained its forecast that net imports of biodiesel will average zero barrels per day in 2025. Net imports of biodiesel averaged 20,000 barrels per day in 2025.

Biodiesel consumption is expected to average 120,000 barrels per day in 2024 and 100,000 barrels per day in 2025. Both forecasts were maintained from the October STEO. Biodiesel consumption averaged 130,000 barrels per day last year.

The EIA currently expects U.S. renewable diesel production to average 210,000 barrels per day in 2024 and 230,000 barrels per day in 2025. Both forecasts were maintained from last month. Renewable diesel production averaged 170,000 barrels per day last year.

The agency predicts net imports of renewable diesel will average 40,000 barrels per day this year, compared to the October forecast of 30,000 barrels per day. The EIA maintained its forecast that net renewable diesel imports will average 20,000 barrels per day next year. Net imports of renewable diesel were at 20,000 barrels per day last year.

The EIA maintained its forecast that renewable diesel consumption will average 240,000 barrels per day this year, but lowered its forecast for 2025 renewable diesel consumption. The agency currently predicts renewable diesel consumption will average 240,000 barrels per day next year, down from the October forecast of 250,000 barrels per day. Renewable diesel consumption averaged 190,000 barrels per day in 2023.

Production of “other” biofuels, defined to include renewable heating oil, renewable jet fuel (including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), alternative jet fuel and biojet), renewable naphtha, renewable gasoline, and other emerging biofuels that are in various stages of development and commercialization, is expected to average 20,000 barrels per day this year, increasing to 40,000 barrels per day in 2025. Both forecasts were maintained from the October STEO. The production of “other” biofuels averaged 20,000 barrels per day last year.

Net imports of “other” biofuels are expected to average zero barrels per day in both 2024 and 2025, unchanged from last month. Net imports of “other” biofuels averaged zero barrels per day last year.

The consumption of “other” biofuels is expected to average 20,000 barrels per day this year and 40,000 barrels per day next year, unchanged from the October STEO. The consumption of “other” biofuels was at 20,000 barrels per day in 2023.
