Biofuels are making up an increasing share of total distillate fuel oil consumed in the U.S. Beginning in the September 2024 Short-Term Energy Outlook, the U.S. EIA began publishing forecasts that will better capture how biofuels are being consumed.
The U.K.’s National Oceanography Centre is trialing the use of a fossil-free marine diesel to fuel the Royal Research Ships (RRS) James Cook and Discovery. The trial is funded by the U.K.’s Natural Environment Research Council.

Barriers that are currently preventing the use of greater percentages of biomass-based diesel fuel blended into petroleum diesel have been identified, along with strategies to overcome them, according to researchers at NREL.
