Renewable diesel drives growth in biomass-based diesel imports

U.S. imports of biomass-based diesel grew 26 percent in 2019 to more than 27,000 barrels per day, ending two years in a row of decline. Imports increased in 2019 because of the increase in renewable diesel imports from Singapore.
The April FAO price index for vegetable oils slipped 7.2 points, or 5.2 percent, compared to the previous month, to 131.8 points. This was the lowest level since August 2019 and also the third decline in three months running.
Neste is making its trademarked renewable diesel available to dozens of new fueling stations in Finland this spring. With 51 additional locations carrying the renewable fuel, approximately 120 stations across Finland will now carry the product.
Only two of seven additives tested passed AGQM's new no-harm test for biodiesel cold flow improvers, and both are manufactured by Chimec. The new test procedure, developed by Germany's AGQM, is called the No-Harm Test BDFI and consists of two parts.
The area in the EU-27 planted with legumes for the 2020 crop will presumably be up 9 percent at 2.5 million metric tons. Soybeans account for the largest hectarage and see the biggest increase in area relative to other legume crops.

EU produces a third of global biomass-based diesel output

Global biodiesel, renewable diesel and coprocessed renewable diesel production reached 41 million metric tons in 2018, or roughly 12.3 billion gallons, according to UFOP. The EU's share was 34 percent, or approximately 4.2 billion gallons.
Waste power plant Renova in Sweden has switched its eight start-up and support burners to run on biodiesel made from rapeseed oil, thereby reducing its use of fossil fuel oil. The switch reduces CO2 emissions by 960 metric tons annually.
U.K.-based biodiesel producer and midstream oil company Greenergy announced Dec. 11 that the U.K.'s Serious Fraud Office has advised that the company and its employees are no longer suspects in an ongoing investigation first announced in May.
